City cricketer makes it big in South Africa

Tejinder Pal Singh, a 27-year-old blind cricketer from Jalandhar, the first from the state, has made the country proud in the Cricket World Cup for Blind held at Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday.India beat defending champions Pakistan in the 4th Cricket World Cup for Blind. While Pakistan was out at 389,
India won the game by scoring 392.“The team worked hard and we were sure of winning the championship. I have learned few latest techniques from players of other countries, which I would like to share with my fellow blind players in the state,” said Tejinder. He has recently completed his Masters from the Punjab Technical University (PTU) and is planning to pursue a PhD on 'Sports prospects for the blind in India'.Since, the Cricket Association for Blinds in India was facing a cash crunch, it asked all 17 players to fend for them by arranging an amout of Rs 1.50 lakh for the trip and training preceding the
tournament. The player knocked several doors to find a sponsor to fund his trip.The cricketer tried to seek an appointment with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, but he was told to follow a regional news channel to keep track of the whereabouts of the Chief Minster and meet him whenever he happened to visit Jalandhar.Following this, Monty Sehgal, a city-based businessman and Surinder Nijjhar, a UK- based NRI sponsored his trip by paying him 1.10 lakhs, the fee for the tournament.
