The Punjab government on Tuesday agreed to fill all 274 vacant posts reserved for disabled persons in three corporations of Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana as demanded by members of Handicapped Welfare Union, who had been on a fast over the issue since last 20 days.
A decision to this effect has been taken in a meeting with a delegation of Handicapped Welfare Union led by its state president Mangal Singh Gill at the level of principal Secretary to the chief minister SK Sandhu and secretary (local government) Ashok Gupta, a spokesperson said.
On the assurance from the senior officer, the association immediately announced to call off their ongoing strike.
Members of the Handicapped Welfare Union had been on indefinite hunger strike outside the local government department's office here for the last 20 days, demanding filling of 274 vacant posts reserved for handicapped category persons at Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana Corporations.
The spokesperson said that Sandhu sympathetically listened to the grievances of the union and amicably resolved the matter to their satisfaction.
