Bhubaneswar, April 12: Twenty four cases of fake disability certificate holders have surfaced and their admissions into a teachers training programme have been cancelled by the director of teachers education and state council of educational research and training (TE & SCERT).
Visually disabled students have pressed the state government to consider the applications of genuine students in place of the rejected ones.
It may be noted here that candidates with less than 40 per cent disability are not eligible to get the benefits of the one per cent reservation quota.
Following the admission process for the 2014-15 session and the subsequent scrutiny, 33 certificates were found fake. However, out of these, admissions of only 24 candidates were cancelled.
"We do not know why the remaining nine students are spared," said Bijay Kumar Sahu, president of the All Odisha Students Union for the visually impaired.
Ironically, the students whose admissions were cancelled by the department approached the court and were permitted to attend the class till the next hearing.
The students expressed concern about the growing number of fake disability certificates being used for government jobs across the state.
"This has put the career of the genuine certificate holders at risk. It is extremely sad that frauds are trying to rob us of our benefits," said disabled activist Sanyas Behera.
The students urged the director of TE and SCERT to complete the entire process of disability certificate verification before the publication of final merit list of the students for the 2015-16 onwards.
