VELLORE: The Alumni Association (Association) of the Vellore Blind School, which met on Tuesday, to commemorate the 42nd death anniversary of its founder, T Peters, highlighted the need to upgrade the school to the Plus Two level.

The residential school presently offers classes only up to Class 8 for blind students in the region.

Sankar, the general secretary of the Association, said that the students of the school, after completing Class 8 have to relocate to Chennai or some other place to continue their education. If this school were able to offer classes up to the Plus Two level, it will benefit students. Sankar claimed that many former students of this school are leading successful lives and would gladly contribute to the development of the school.

“In addition, we are keen to help the present batch of students get vocational skills,” he added.

Social activist R Chandarsekaran who was the chief guest on the occasion, suggested that the premises of the school could also provide accommodation to other blind students pursuing higher studies in colleges in Vellore. Former students who hold good positions as teachers, judges and other key positions, should be tapped for the management of the school, he added.

The alumni after paying homage to T Peters and Sakuntala, an inmate who had recently passed away, by garlanding their portraits recalled the struggles undertaken by the founder in the 1950s to establish this school. Kuppammal (55) and Arogyasamy (58) associates of Peters remembered how he had come to
Vellore for eye treatment in the 1950s and the fact that he had lost his vision after receiving eye treatment in Vellore. Without losing hope, he decided to help blind persons and set up the school.
